Every stone tells a story, and every corner offers a new adventure… and we want to share ours with you! The Monastery of Boltaña, located in the heart of the Aragonese Pyrenees, is not only a testament to 17th-century architecture but also a reflection of the region’s history. Today, reborn as our magnificent Hotel & Spa, we want to tell you how this incredible place has become the haven of peace, beauty, and serenity it is today.

The Origins of the Monastery

Built in the mid-17th century by the Order of the Discalced Carmelites, the monastery was erected on an ancient hermitage dedicated to the Holy Spirit. The Carmelites chose this location for its tranquility, natural beauty, favorable Mediterranean climate, and strategic position next to the Ara River. The church of El Carmen, situated right above the hermitage, is a notable example of Baroque architecture of the time, with its Latin cross floor plan and barrel vaults.

The Disentailment and change of ownership

The disentailment of Mendizábal in 1835-1836 forced the monks to abandon the monastery, which then passed through the hands of several owners over the years. These new owners continued using the lands for agricultural and livestock activities, adapting to the needs of each era.

Transformation into a Sanatorium

In 1910, Dr. Isaac Noguera, a renowned surgeon from Barcelona and a native of Sobrarbe, acquired the building and converted it into a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients. The clean climate and pure air of Boltaña were ideal for treating respiratory diseases. The Monastery then had a new purpose, becoming a place of healing and recovery.

From Sanatorium to Hostel

After 70 years of service as a sanatorium, the building was converted into a hostel for tourists and youth camps. This new use allowed many people to discover the beauty and serenity of the place, although it became somewhat deteriorated due to the significant changes it had undergone over the years.

Renaissance as a Hotel and Spa

In 2005, the Monastery of Boltaña was reborn thanks to a meticulous restoration that respected its original 17th-century architecture. Today, this magnificent building offers guests the opportunity to enjoy luxurious accommodation and a relaxing spa in a historical setting. The former monks’ cells and communal spaces have been transformed into elegant rooms and wellness areas, combining the charm of the past with modern comforts.

A Place for Reflection and Pleasure

The Monastery of Boltaña is not just a place to stay but also a place to immerse yourself in a unique history. As you stroll through its cloisters and gardens, visitors can imagine the lives of the Discalced Carmelites who once inhabited this tranquil enclave.
